Chevy Engine Care: Tips for Long-Term Performance

The engine is the most important and valuable part of your Chevy. It contains numerous systems that must work together to provide the power to move your vehicle. As time passes, parts will wear out or become damaged, and engine performance suffers. As your Chevy dealer, we want to give you a few examples of the types of Chevy engine maintenance we provide.

Examples of Chevy Engine Maintenance Available at Your Chevy Dealer

Spark Plug Replacement

A spark plug is connected to each engine cylinder and ignites the fuel-air mixture in its cylinder once the mixture is sufficiently compressed. Once this happens, the fuel-air mixture creates a carefully timed series of miniature explosions that generate the energy to move your Chevy. The plugs wear out due to age and can also be affected by other engine issues.

A plug that doesn't ignite the mixture correctly causes a misfire. You'll feel a drop in power and a lurching sensation, and repeated misfiring can damage the cylinders and pistons. If more than one plug is damaged, your Chevy can stall, and this sudden stopping could result in an accident. We'll test your spark plugs and replace any damaged ones.

Oil Replacement

Oil is pumped through your engine and lubricates all moving parts. Lubrication is essential, as many engine components depend on friction to work effectively, and the oil protects them with a friction-resistant coating. The oil's movement cools hot components, helping to reduce the engine temperature. In addition, oil contains a variety of additives that keep your engine clean, prevent rust, and break down blockages.

As time passes, the oil absorbs dirt, tiny metal fragments, and other debris. This makes the oil thicker and slower, and it loses many of its special properties. Thicker oil can clog the oil filter, which can cause engine damage. We'll drain the old oil and install a new oil filter. We then seal the oil sump where the oil is stored and refill your engine with fresh oil.

Air Filter Replacement

Combustion requires fuel and air. While fuel is delivered to the intake manifold by the fuel injectors, air enters through the radiator grille and passes into the engine air filter. This filter traps dust, dirt, and other debris, allowing only clean air to enter the intake manifold and mix with the fuel. In time, the filter will become clogged with dirt, and airflow into the engine becomes restricted.

A lack of air for combustion turns the engine fuel-rich, and the higher fuel-to-air ratio increases fuel consumption while reducing engine performance. Additionally, the fuel-rich atmosphere damages the spark plugs and other engine components by coating them in sticky carbon. Replacing a filter takes a few seconds, and the fuel-to-air ratio will return to normal.
